Workshop Information

Workshop InformationDescription
Rap and Read(For Elementary and Middle Schools) Students are equipped with proven strategies to successfully comprehend reading selections and to correctly respond to questions on standardized reading exams. The Four P's to Pass make students accountable for pre-reading passages, perusing paragraphs, picking answers, and proving them. Mnemonics, music, and movement are then utilized to dramatically improve retention. Concepts such as understanding word meaning, finding the main idea, identifying cause and effect, making inferences, drawing conclusions, and recognizing context clues are covered. By feeling prepared to master reading objectives, students enjoy bolstered confidence and a sense of accomplishment.
Grooving Grammar Groovin' Grammar was created to add spice to traditional grammar instruction. After identifying the most common pitfalls in English usage, participants engage in chanting to facilitate memorization of the parts of speech and their correct usage. Unforgettable songs and chants empower attendees to avoid errors in written and spoken communication like subject-verb disagreement, double negatives, apostrophe omission, pronoun disagreement, adjective and adverb misuse, prepositional mistakes, and incorrect verb use. This workshop is especially effective for regular and ESL students who have difficulty expressing their thoughts in standard English. Students walk away with tools to broaden their vocabulary, speak confidently, and create meaningful sentences.
Writing: The Inking of Your ThinkingThis workshop covers the organization, elaboration, and editing strategies required to create well-organized and precise written works. Schools choose one focus (e.g. organization, elaboration, or editing) to be covered per two-day seminar, since all topics cannot be adequately covered. The Five P's of Powerful Papers (e.g. prompt, ponder, points, paragraphs, perfection) provide the framework for each workshop, after which the main objective becomes the focus. In the organization portion, students learn and utilize strategies and vocabulary to respond to various types of prompts. Twenty-one elaboration strategies are modeled during the elaboration workshop. Pupils are required to select the strategies that appeal to them most before utilizing them in context with proper punctuation. Finally, common writing pitfalls such as vagueness, wordiness, and poor sentence structure are the focus on the workshop on editing.

Two and four-hour seminars for adults are entitled:

  • Precise Pronunciation
  • Grown Folks’ Grammar
  • Rewriting 101
  • Book Building (Every book begins with a thought)
  • Participatory Parents

Why Our Strategies Work

Website lessons and webinars reinforce course objectives. (www.shanwag.org)

Oral and written proficiency, taught methodically, are equally emphasized.

Relatable and practical conversation promotes fluency in stages, progressing from one-word utterances to complex sentences.  Students who take risks, apply patterns, and supplement classwork usually accelerate their fluency in their target languages.

Kindness is our trademark.  Students are encouraged to pose questions, seek clarity, and express opinions respectfully.

ATTENDANCE

Only one monthly planned absence can be made up. Unannounced absences (that are non-emergencies) cannot be made up. Depending on availability, make-up sessions for private students might be conducted in a small-group session.

Weekly attendance is required, so there is no fluctuating payment option that allows clients to take breaks or pro-rate payments based on travel or sporting commitments. Though there is a once-per month make-up policy, we make exceptions (based on availability) for clients who have unforeseen schedule shifts due to emergencies or last-minute changes in extracurricular practice schedules due to inclement weather, for instance.

In order to hold scheduled time slots for clients who choose to take a summer break from June through August (after the initial three, six, or nine-month commitment has been met) we must be paid in advance for upcoming services delivered in September. This allows us to be fair to summer clients interested in continuing services in the fall. In other words, we would like our summer clients to have the option to extend services through the fall semester should there be an opening.

TESTIMONIALS

Testimonials from Satisfied Customers (Tutoring)
Mrs. Wagner is very flexible and compassionate. She really cares about my daughter’s progress in her dual credit classes. Though my daughter is finishing Spanish 3 Dual Credit this summer, she will continue being under Mrs. Wagner’s tutelage to further develop her fluency. My eight-year old, who just got started, loves Mrs. Wagner’s classes. I highly recommend her to anyone who is serious about becoming bilingual. The sessions are worth every penny.
Mrs. Chatman, parent

Mrs. Wagner is an excellent tutor who knows how to help students master the material. Since she has been tutoring me in dual credit Spanish, I’ve earned nothing but A’s and a few B’s. Also, her hourly rates are reasonable!
Savannah Chatman, Dawson High School

After observing Mrs. Wagner in her first session with my son, I felt relieved and reassured that all would end well. It is evident that she really loves teaching. My only regret is I didn’t know about her services sooner!
Shonthenia Edwards

She is a very motivating teacher who worked wonders in a short time. My failing grade in Spanish rose to a solid B. Muchísimas gracias, Señora Wagner.
Norval Edwards, Linebacker at Lamar High School (Mrs. Wagner’s alma mater)

She is awesome! Mrs. Wagner made a huge difference is my progress. I look forward to her sessions and enjoy every moment. I love the way she simplifies concepts!
Nicole Williams, Dawson High School

As a parent, I realize there is no way my daughter would have made it in dual credit Spanish classes without your expertise. You are truly a Godsend. Thank you!
Rashun Williams, parent

It was refreshing to witness my son’s immediate progress in Spanish, a class that he now loves thanks to Mrs. Wagner. Jules actually looked forward to going to tutoring during the time in his day normally reserved for basketball. That speaks volumes! His grade rose by two levels! We will definitely be returning this academic year! It was a worthwhile investment. My children embraced Spanish when Mrs. Wagner embraced them.
Theresa Moor

She really broke things down and built my confidence in the only class that frustrated me. As a result, I quickly understood and began to really enjoy Spanish. I can’t wait until my fall sessions begin!
Jules Moor, Dawson

After just one session with Mrs. Wagner, I earned a perfect score on my test the next day! She effortlessly and patiently answered all my questions! So, I recommend her not only for students struggling with Spanish, but for those who want to enhance their conversational skills!
Jillyan Moor, Dawson High School
